This past Sunday, the LA Times ran an article which was essentially an inflammatory pummeling of the EDM scene. It painted a picture of “Ecstasy-fueled underground” raves, bumped up into the mainstream, leaving a trail of dead, drug-addled kids being picked up by the “…coroner’s wagon rolling…

I haven’t used this in ages, but if anything could smoke me out of my tree stump, it would be this.

Oh hai guys!!

Well here I am, alive and kicking (and obviously not using eye cream to medicate summer’s events-that will be in another post).

For now, let’s try to focus on this horrid, horrid photo of me by the ‘CN Tower’. The CN Tower, if you aren’t familiar with it, it’s the tallest free-standing structure in the Western Hemisphere. Up until 2010, it was the tallest in the world! And truth be told, this isn’t the real one. This was taken in Niagara Falls. The real one is much much taller.

This is Tim by the actual CN Tower.

So why, do you ask am I talking about this building?

On October 20th, Tim, Uana, and I (aka Team Mothy) will be doing the Enbridge CN Tower Climb (the steps inside, not Spiderman-ing the exterior of it) to help raise money for United Way.

October 20th, which is a day right after the 19th. The 19th, which is Calvin Harris’ show in Montreal. Anjo (our purveyor of all things EDM), had this to say about Calvin Harris.

As Mike said, “If Anjo recommends it, you know it’s gonna be worth it.” Sadly, it is with a heavy heart that I will be missing Calvin’s show to do this climb. At this point, if that’s not sacrifice, I don’t know what is.

But enough overdramatization, let’s go back to the CN Tower Climb!

That’s 80 floors and a total of 1,776 steps! Our physical goal is to do it under 30 minutes. Our monetary goal is to raise a substantial amount of money to support United Way’s cause of providing a better life for people in the city who cannot do it on their own.

Over the past three years, Toronto has been the backdrop of our friendship. If it weren’t for this city, none of us would know each other or build the relationships that we currently have. (Uyyy cheezy!) Particularly after the summer that’s just been, I think it’s about time we give back to this city.

Meet Team Mothy! And yes, even if Ginj isn’t doing the climb with us, she is still part of Team Mothy.

Have you seen who will be playing for Tomorrowland this year? Like, this is only Friday’s lineup.

Then there’s also Ushuaia, which is gonna be one of SHM’s shows (praying to all the old gods, and the new ones that they play anywhere in North America before they break up. I will go WHEREVER IT IS!).

And of course, the holy grail of unattainability, Milton Keynes!

Since I can’t afford to be at any of those events, this is the next best thing. iTunes, what would I do without you?

When Enrique first told me he got tickets to Once, I was like “Uh oh, will I get it without having seen the movie?”

Everyone I knew (and their mother) had seen the movie. Was I a social outcast for not having seen it yet?

Suffice to say, I didn’t need to see the movie to appreciate the beauty of Once. If I wasn’t crying, Enrique was crying. And if Enrique wasn’t crying, the lady beside me was crying. Everyone in the audience was sniffling at one point or another. It was moving and beautiful and if you find yourself in New York any time soon, PLEASE GO SEE THIS SHOW.

Since we went to see the matinee, we were hungry horses afterwards. Enrique suggested a sushi place near the theatre where “Broadway actors usually go after the show.” I was skeptical at first, after all, it was Enrique! And to be honest, I was just happy there was gonna be food.

But as the Broadway gods would have it, lo and behold the guy seated beside us!!

Enrique told him “If there’s one show I would see this season, it would be Once.” We were seriously wishing Steve wouldn’t ask us how many shows we’d seen at that point (it was only at 2 then), and true enough he genuinely thanked us for taking our time to say hi. Enrique and I were on a high for the rest of the day.

So when Steve won the Tony for Best Leading Actor in a Musical last Sunday, I couldn’t help but smile! And then he gave the speech that would melt a million hearts, and I cried again. God this guy keeps making me cry!! Congratulations again, Steve. You truly, absolutely deserved it!

This would actually be my worst nightmare. #whatisANNOYING

Concerts

Since moving here, I’ve been to quite a few concerts. One of the perks of living here is that more artists include Toronto in their tours, so it’s much easier to catch your favourite act.

The harder part is finding people who like the same music as you. And even then, sometimes they’re just not concert-going folk. So I’m really glad I met the friends I have here who like concerts as much as me.

My first Toronto concert experience was with Cara and her sisters in August of 2009. This was the Jason Mraz concert at the Molson Amphitheatre.

I try to watch a concert in every city I go to, I think it makes the trip all the more memorable.

April 16 was my “three year anniverary” since the big move. Amusingly enough, I spent the subsequent anniversaries all outside of Toronto (my home).

The first (in 2010) was spent in New York bidding Kab adieu.

At the Whole Foods in Time Warner with Kab (and Jo).

The second (2011) was spent in Montreal.

I got off a six hour bus ride to find our that Joe and I were dressed almost exactly the same. The denim shirt, blue scarf, khaki jacket, black tights, black bag, and Chucks, all a coincidence. CREEPY.

This year (2012), I spent the anniversary south of the border once more.

My DC trip was the most extravagant food trip I’ve ever been on. More on that in another post. This was taken at Toki Underground. I want to say more about that place, but we can do that in another post (let’s call that post “The Best of DC”).

I don’t mean to always be out of Toronto every April 16th, it just happens that way..every year.

But since the theme has mostly been homesickness, lemme reminisce on the date that actually mattered, the one 3 years ago.

On my last day in Manila, all I wanted to do was play frisbee in Ateneo one last time. Since the sprinklers were on, we decided to do this instead.

When those sprinklers blast you in the face, they hurt much more than you would expect. You can’t really see it, but my headband flew off my head in this shot.

It was so much fun.

But alas, all good things must come to an end.

I wonder where I’ll be on this date in 2013?

Getting Messy: Carrera, Survivor, & Dayglow

The first time I heard about Dayglow was through this article. If you read through it, you’ll realize that the author did not enjoy himself at all. He couldn’t have been more blatant about that. But if his intention was to turn people off by the idea of moshing into a paint-splattered crowd, well he obviously didn’t achieve that. At least not with me.

But then again, my idea of fun is very different.

As a child, my cousins and I weren’t allowed to play outside, get dirty, or roll around. On the contrary, our idea of fun was taking showers in the palanggana that was used to wash our clothes.

The food fight scene in the movie Hook was my dream.

So I guess it was only natural for me to go in the other direction when I grew up (AKA get super messy).

In 2005, I joined my first Carrera Loyola. It’s our school’s version of the Amazing Race. You run around school (and somewhere in Marikina) completing a set of challenges and in the process, you get really dirty.

That’s me in my WHITE swimsuit crawling under a net through the mud to complete a challenge.

Look at my ever supportive teammate Ivy laughing at me instead of cheering me on.

In fact, we were so dirty that the guards wouldn’t let us take a shower in the locker rooms. So this is us improvising; taking a shower in the Soc Sci field.

It may not look it, but I had the best time of my life. So much fun that I joined the next one.

This is the 2007 Carrera Loyola. I was muddier than the last one.

I have to say, I’m pretty impressed by that swimsuit. It survived TWO MUDDY races.

It also survived Survivor Tagaytay, an annual game my friends and I would hold every time our friends in New York came home.

For this challenge, we were supposed to crush the eggs of the opposing team while guarding our own. Each person had two eggs.

It got pretty intense.

At one point Mike even lost his shoe! We got into a debate on whether we should give him a timeout to put it back on or go on with the challenge shoe-less.

Enrique tried his best to protect me.

But they took me down.

And we lost.

If any of you are wondering, egg stains are by far the smelliest and hardest to get out of your clothes.

But still, fun nonetheless.

Since then, I moved to Canada, cleaned up my act (HAHA), and have been nicer to my clothes.

I was jealous of all my friends back home who had been to Sinulog, and even more so of my friends from here who had gone home and experienced it.

And then I read that article, and thought that if I wouldn’t be able to experience Sinulog just yet, I can at least do this.

So I asked Justine and Andre if they wanted to go, and just like that, I booked my ticket to DC.

Finally, the day arrived.

And then things got real.

Real messy. (I can’t stop these puns, I’m sorry!)

Justine looks like she’s going to cry, but I promise she’s having a good time.

I don’t know understand how and why Tim is cleaner than all of us!

I definitely swallowed more than two tablespoons of paint (is it too late to wonder if that was bad for me?) that night, but dancing to Alesso spinning Nillionaire in the wonderful weather (glorious 25C) of DC while people were spraying paint everywhere was glorious. And amazing.

Now, next up on the messy diaries: Sinulog 2013!!

Homesick I: Boracay

Everyone is going to Boracay, or is in Boracay, or just came from there. Despite all the bad press about E.coli, excessive algae, and over commercialization, Boracay will still hold memories near and dear to my heart (#baduy).

There’s nothing more refreshing than standing on the shore (uy Empire of the Sun reference) and feeling the water come in.

My number one meal: Tapsilog from Lemon i Cafe.

OMG prawns and garlic rice. AND CALAMANSI JUICE (lemonade will never compare).

We wanted to jump into the water so bad.
